Environmental storage is a specialized part of any records management companies arsenal of services. Traditional Records management involves the basic principals of collection boxes and files from our customers for off site storage, transporting them to our individual records centers, having each box, file or item indexed catalogued and then stored on our specially designed racking in individually bar-coded locations for quick and easy recognition when they will be required to be returned to our clients. Usually, most document storage clients information is just paper based, environmentally, it is not necessary to store these items in anything other than an ambient environment of temperature and humidity. Paper will not degenerate under these conditions and will be good for many years, probably far longer than it retention schedule allows. But what if your information does require special storage conditions? Certain clients of Archive America require their information to be held in conditions that are not only stable but have constant temperature and humidity.

Two of the main candidates for this type of storage are x-ray film and computer tape media. X-ray film is particularly susceptible to humidity and moisture. As most people have see an x-ray at one point or another it is safe to say, that it is common knowledge that should there be a mark on an x-ray where there should not be, this could result in a major problem. Our Environmental Storage facilities here at Archive America have climate controlled environments so that just such a problem cannot occur. Our radiology and x-ray storage facilities contain racking designed just for the storage of x-ray film, eliminating the possibility of damage. Our specialized software system allows us to scan barcodes on each radiology jacket and then have each x-ray film scanned to an individual location, therefore speeding up the retrieval process. Tape media storage and backup tapes, in all their shapes and sizes are probably the most susceptible to environmental change. Any extreme of temperature or humidity could have very damaging effects on any of these types of media. This is why our offsite vault storage facilities are fully equipped, climate controlled environments where tape media and backup tapes can be stored safety and securely.
